Ableton Serato The Bridge

Ableton and Serato bridge the gap between music production and DJing with The Bridge. The Bridge requires Serato Scratch Live 2.1.1 and Ableton Live/Suite 8.2 or above. Open both programs at the same time with Rane hardware attached to activate The Bridge online.

Remix Your Own Tracks Live

The Bridge gives you turntable-style control of your own multitrack productions. Simply drag an Ableton Live Set to a deck in Scratch Live and use your turntables or CDJ to control the transport. Scratch Live enhances your productions with deck control, mixing, nudging and DJ style looping, while you can remix, mute/solo tracks, use virtual instruments, change drum patterns, manipulate audio, tweak effects and launch loops on the fly in Ableton Live.

Welcome To The Next Level

Apart from your Scratch Live hardware, using an additional dedicated controller such as Akai Professional APC40, APC20, or Novation Launchpad opens up your game for more mixing, effects handling and for triggering clips.

Learn How To Set Up Your Gear

If you're just getting started with Ableton Live, you'll want to go through the Ableton Live lessons, located inside the program in the Help View

The World

Behind the scenes, Ableton and Serato have implemented a two-way communication link to connect the programs. The timing is tight and it doesn't matter which program you open first.

How Do You Do

This is just one in a million ways you can use these two glorious programs together. You can learn these ways in the ableton community and also Serato forums.

  1. I open up scratchlive and go into to my history. And pic the night that I knew I rocked out.
  2. Select all of those files, copy and make a new folder on the desk top and paste them in that new folder, and export the playlist.
  3. Exit out of scratchlive and open up itunes and take the files in the folder and drag and drop into itunes.
  4. Select all files in itunes you just dropped in and convert files to waves.
  5. Open up ableton, and drag all the files into the audio channel. Arrange them by looking at your playlist you exported. "By doing this you already know these songs work toghter cause that's how you played them in front of a crowd."
  6. Insert more track to work with files while warping, cutting, and cropping different tracks. Just taking the break or the hook of the song, or all of the above.
  7. Insert a midi track with a drum, double click on clip to make a blank midi clip.
  8. This you will need a midi controller push in to select midi notes using as a step sequencer. Or having the bar length set to repeat for as many bars you wish. "For playing live drums over your clips"
  9. Insert one audio input track, and two audio channel.
  10. Change the input of the two new audio channels to the input channel.
  11. Add another sound card to route the record,or booth output of your dj mixer into the input track. To trigger a clip to loop from your turntables. "This also can be done using the looper device in ableton also with just one track. This is just a preference."
  12. Now add effect devices to your channels, group to use certain parameters on certain effects with the macro knobs.
  13. Collect and save. "Name Set"
  14. Delete new folders on desk top.
  15. Open up scratchlive.
  16. Select all on the crate browser in scratchlive.
  17. Start to beat grid all your files or the main ones you know your gonna play.
  18. Set save loops, cue points.
  19. Make a crate just for your live set for the file you will use for the live set.
  20. Only loop at your laptop when finding, or selecting the next song.
There are many ways out there you can use the bridge. There's no wrong way or a right way. It's how your gonna use it, and how you dj what works for you. If you know scratchlive in and out ok. Leave it alone for awhile and work on ableton to increase your craft of performance. So if you think you know ableton good enough ok. Leave that alone and PLEASE work on basic scratching and mixing skills. When its all said and done, put all you have worked together into one flow of continuous head banging party rocking club on fire you will remember me after this.

MPD 32 With Yellow Box For Ableton

Doing a little Ableton and Serato surfing and ran cross this. This is really cute just to have a 4x4 block in ableton using a akai mpd32. Not sure if it works with the bridge yet though. But from my experience remote scripts don't work in the bridge GUI. Hopefully this will not last long cause there are a lot of custom scripts out there.

A few things you need to know:
- The script only uses control bank A and pad bank A. If you want to use the script as is, you need to set up the sliders and buttons so they send messages on midi channel 1:
F1-F8: CC12-CC19, S1-S8: CC32-CC39, K1-K9: CC22-CC29, Transport Buttons from left to right: CC115-119, PAD1-PAD16: Note36-Note51
- The pads control a 4x4 clip matrix. The red box can be moved by using S5-S8. S1-S4 select the 4 tracks in the red box. F1-F4 are mapped to the Sends A in the red box, F5-F8 to Sends B. K1 to K8 control the device parameters of the selected track.
- << and >> are used to go up and down the scenes, STOP is stop al clips, PLAY is launch selected scene and REC is overdub
- When using this script, I set all tracks to "sends only". I use Return A as a kind of a master bus. In my opinion, this has some advantages (e.g. avoiding the "problem" that the volume faders go up to +6dB)

The buttons work like this:
- S8: shift button
- if shift is not pressed:

- S1-S2: select left/right track
- S3-S4: select left/right device
- S5: clip/track
- S6: detail
- S7: on/off

- if shift is pressed:

- S1-S4: move red box up/left/right/down

Controllerism for Ableton Multiple Beat Repeats

All of you Ableton heads out there have probably used the beat repeat effect but I suspect most have never strayed far from the basics. By activating beat repeats manually (instead of by chance), you can take away the randomness and make the repeats happen when you want. When you use more than one copy of the effect you can create multiple layers of beats. Then work in a controller to interact with the beat in a really tactile and expressive way. In today’s article we will explore this basic but creative controllerism technique for Ableton Live.

Serato Artist Series Control Vinyl

Serato are proud to announce the release of the first ever picture disc in the Serato Artist Series - The Eric Orr DJ Robot Control Vinyl.

This Control Vinyl will showcase pieces designed exclusively for Serato by artists from around the world. Working with STOKYO we have created an incredibly unique Control Vinyl. Hand pressed in Japan and 30% lighter than a traditional picture disc; these records are designed by DJs, for DJs.

We are honoured to have the legendary Eric Orr design our first release, which includes a double sided pressing with the licensed Serato Control Tone on each side and 10 hologram cue point stickers.

Eric Orr is an artist and designer from New York City. He attended the School of Visual Arts in 1979 and the Arts Student League during 1980-83, and began his career painting in the NYC subway stations through the early 1980’s. It was there that he substituted typography for his unique character, or symbol, the “Robothead” and collaborated with pop artist Keith Haring on the black panel subway spaces.

Paralleling his art world in the NYC street culture, Eric was part of the hip-hop scene in the late 70’s. He produced work for DJ and community leader Afrika Bambaataa (the godfather of hip hop), the brand logo for the Strong City Records label, and legendary hip hop artists of the 80’s such as Jazzy Jay, Don Baron, Busy Bee, Nu-Sounds, Ultimate Force, Masters of Ceremony and Tony D moving into the 90’s with the Diggin’ In The Crates (DITC) crew and rapper Lord Finesse, Jazzy Joyce, JoeSki Love and Positive K just to name a few.

Serato Scratch Live 2.0.0 live demo - 3 decks with control-vinyl and DJ-FX

Serato SL3 version 2.0 beta - now with three or four decks! 3 or 4 turntables in Serato, finally! AND effects. You the DJ-FX module allows for midi-assignable Braker, Crusher, Delay, Echo, Flanger, HPF, LPF, Phaser, Repeater, Reverb, Reverser and Tremolo. You can potentially use six effects per channel simultaneously, as they're arranged in two sets of three and can be multi-channel assigned. Big things are a-coming for sure...

Ok, so my scratching's not up to that much, but this SL3 Scratch Live 2.0.0 beta live demo shows you what you can roughly do (and this is without a midi controller). Quite clearly the world is your oyster - especially for those with Ableton Live when 'The Bridge' comes out.
